Why Organic Cotton Baby Clothes?

Organic cotton does carry a small price premium. You may ask yourself “What am I getting for the extra money? It may be more pertinent to ask” What am I not getting”?

Cotton is the most universally comfortable, and soft of all fibres. Conventional intensively grown cotton is heavily treated with pesticides. To grow this delicate crop it is sprayed up to 30 to 40 times a season making it one of the most sprayed crops in the world and creating major ecological damage. To create finished goods fabrics are usually coloured with toxic dyes and finished with formaldehyde. Worldwide it is suggested conventional cotton farming uses about 3% of the farmland but consumes approximately 25% of the chemical pesticides and fertilizers.

Certified organic cotton is grown in fields where use of pesticides has been discontinued for at least 3 years and where rigorous controls help to rebuild the soils natural fertility. A successful organic farm requires much more intensive and innovative management. Beneficial insects are allowed to thrive to keep pests in check. Crop rotations with legumes help maintain fertility and soil microbiology. Weeds are controlled with precision tillage and the good old fashioned hoe.

These methods cause no harm to the workers who grow and pick the cotton. The benefit to the consumer especially our babies is the softness and quality that only organic cotton can provide and is one of the main reasons people choose organic cotton for their infants delicate skin
